We do a lot of recording of movies, etc., and keep multiple episodes of our favorite shows for later viewing. This product works wonderfully. Since I installed it I have not had any recorded programs deleted from my TIVO HD to make more space. The installation instructions could have been a little clearer, and I had to go through the process more than once, but once installed it has worked flawlessly. You don't even know it's there, except your recording time seems unlimited.
The Tivo I purchased came with a small disk and I do record many TV programs, more than I watch. It takes several hours before it starts making use of the disk, but you can start using Tivo immediately. 500GB was plenty for me. There is a larger unit avail now, but for the life of me I don't why anyone would need to store a TB of TV programs they want to watch. I recently purchased this hard disk to expand the storage on my Tivo. To buy a Tivo with this much storage would have cost much more. Tivo is up and running as normal and lets you know it has detected the disk. You power down your Tivo, hook up the cables, power on the disk, then the Tivo.
I noticed that the Tivo suggestions started getting a lot more. Its nice to have a lot of choices when I do sit down to watch TV. It work just as advertised. That was it. So I was constantly concerned about running out of space. Installation was an absolute breeze. So far I am very pleased with this purchase. This is a very good, very simple, upgrade.
Very simple. I hooked it up to my TIVO hd and did a reset and it recognized it. Simple as that I have a ton of extra space. If you are a TIVO owner you can't go wrong with this.
When I bought this, 14 months before it died, TiVo told me that it was the only box they'd recommend. While it may not be WD's fault that it is so awkward to use, it's quite a pain in the butt. It is apparently a failure of the controller design, not the drive, for others have reported being able to use the "dead" (s.m.a.r.t. But the worst part is that now, about two months out of warranty, it's become unreliable and error-prone. Shows fail to record, often the TiVo (HD) "forgets" about its unused/available capacity, etc.Reading through the TiVo support forums I see many others have had similar experiences. errors over the threshold) drive on their computers, but the controller/case is somehow fried. So I say "save your time and money. don't buy this device."
But now 90% of my saved programs are gone forever. After unplugging the unit and restarting 3 or 4 times-but never get past the "startup" page, something made me unplug the additional storage drive to see if this would help.
I agree totally. Another reviewer, Early Adopter,on Nov 2008 used just about the same headline as I have above to claim his frustration with a until that died within 18 months.
One morning, my Tivo unit was in "restart" mode, but would not come back to life and start up at all. for a couple of weeks my Tivo unit has been freezing and restarting multiple times when playing back programs.
I was afraid my 2 year old HD TIVO was dying and I don't really have the money to replace it AND pay for ANOTHER "lifetime" subscription (which right now totals about $900 on Tivo.com). Sure enough, the TIVO finally came back to life.
And even worse it looks like i'm stuck buying another one of these, since I am not aware of another manufacturer making these that are compatible with TIVO, and the TIVO unit has such limited storage space for HD programs.
